Guide for Luxembourg Visa Requirements

EU and EEA citizens can enter Luxembourg freely with a valid national ID card or passport, and no visa is required regardless of stay length.

If you're employed, you'll typically also need recent pay slips, an employment contract, and a letter from your employer confirming your leave.

If you're self-employed, business registration documents and recent tax returns are generally requested instead. Documents not in English, French, or German need to be translated by a certified translator.

Thai citizens are not visa-exempt and need to apply for a short-stay Schengen visa using the standard document checklist above. Luxembourg maintains limited direct diplomatic representation in Southeast Asia. As of September 2026, applications are handled through the Embassy of Luxembourg in Bangkok, where an appointment is required in advance.

Documents required for Thai Citizens

Only applications from persons who reside legally in Thailand will be reviewed by the consular section of the Luxembourg Embassy in Bangkok.

The documents required are as follows:

1. Visa application form: This must be completed in full and signed.
2. One recent photo (taken within the last 3 months) should be submitted and attached to the application. The photo must be (35 x 45 mm), not older than 6 months, in color, taken against a plain cream, light blue, or light grey background. The photo should be neither stapled nor pasted.
3. Passport with validity of at least 3 months after the planned journey ends (and one copy), plus previous passports, if any.
4. Identity Card, Work Permit, Residence Permit and one copy of each.
5. Letter of employment (original) or evidence of business ownership, such as Business Registration Certificate (and a copy) and Income Tax Payment Certificate or Receipt (true copy).
6. For minors (person under 18 travelling alone or with only one parent):
7. Birth certificate, proof of custody (e.g. marriage certificate, divorce certificate, registration of residence); and
8. Authorisation to travel (alone or with one parent) indicating the purpose of the trip and signed by both parents/legal guardians or by the parent/guardian who does not travel, with a copy of their passports or national identification cards. The signature(s) should be verified by a legal entity (e.g., municipal registration office or court).
9. Six months of bank statements or bank account booklets copied and certified by the bank, or an original document from the bank (in English) indicating the balance (exact amount); or other proof of sufficient means of subsistence for the intended entire journey and the duration of stay.
10. Round-trip flight booking (and a copy)

12. Travel insurance (plus one copy)

The insurance must cover:

• Cost of repatriation for medical reasons or death.
• Urgent healthcare and emergency hospital treatment for the entire stay and throughout the Schengen area.

• Coverage must be of at least €30,000 or its equivalent in local currency.

As of September 2026, Luxembourg is represented by the Netherlands in Indonesia; applications are submitted through the Benelux Visa Centre, run by VFS Global, in Jakarta, Bali, or Surabaya.

Malaysian citizens similarly don't need a visa for tourism or business stays up to 90 days within a 6-month period. As of September 2026, Luxembourg has no physical embassy in Malaysia and is represented by the Belgian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur; visa applications are submitted directly at the embassy.

If your trip includes Luxembourg alongside other Schengen countries, the application needs to go through the right country, not just any Schengen embassy that's convenient.

The rule is straightforward: You apply through the embassy or visa center of your main destination, meaning wherever you'll spend the most time or, if time is split evenly, your first point of entry into the Schengen Area.

If Luxembourg is genuinely where you're spending the majority of your trip, you apply through Luxembourg. If it's a two-day stop on a longer trip through France or Germany, you'd apply through whichever of those is actually your main destination instead.

Getting this wrong can mean a rejected or redirected application, so it's worth mapping out your itinerary honestly before deciding where to apply, rather than defaulting to whichever country's visa center is most convenient to reach.

How Much Does a Luxembourg Schengen Visa Cost

The standard Schengen visa fee structure applies:

• Adults: €90
• Children aged 6–12: €45
• Children under 6: Free

However, there are certain exceptions and reductions:

• Students: Reduced fees or waivers may apply for students or postgraduates and accompanying teachers on educational trips.
• Researchers: Individuals travelling for scientific research may benefit from reduced fees.
