Guide for Portugal Visa Requirements

visa requirements portugal

Figuring out what documents you need for a Portugal Schengen visa? You're in the right place. This visa lets you explore Portugal and stay for up to 90 days within any 180-day window.

What you'll actually need to submit depends partly on your nationality and your own circumstances. But whether you arrive by land, sea, or air, border authorities will expect to see a core set of documents.

Portugal Schengen Visa Document Checklist

Here's what you'll need for a Portugal tourist Schengen visa:

  • A completed, signed Schengen visa application form.
  • A valid passport, issued within the last 10 years, with at least 3 months of validity remaining past your planned departure from the Schengen Area, plus 2 blank pages minimum
  • Two recent passport-style photos that meet Schengen photo specs
  • Travel and medical insurance covering at least €30,000, valid across the whole Schengen Area for your entire trip
  • A cover letter or itinerary laying out the purpose and dates of your visit
  • Proof of accommodation, whether that's a confirmed hotel booking or something equivalent, covering your full stay
  • A round-trip or onward flight itinerary
  • Proof you can support yourself financially, usually bank statements from the last 3 months. Portugal doesn't set a fixed minimum, but you'll need to show enough for accommodation, meals, and day-to-day costs.
  • Proof of civil status where it's relevant, like a marriage certificate, if that applies to you
  • A photocopy of your passport's ID page, kept separate from the passport itself.
  • Copies of any Schengen visas you've held in the last 5 years, if any.
  • If you're employed, you'll also need recent pay slips, your employment contract, and a letter from your employer confirming approved leave.
  • Self-employed? Swap those for business registration documents and recent tax returns. And anything that isn't already in English or Portuguese will need a certified translation.

Proving Financial Means for Your Portugal Visa Application

The embassy wants to see that you can cover your own costs without relying on state assistance, so this part of the application matters more than it might seem.

  • Bank statements. Usually covering the last 3 to 6 months, showing enough to cover accommodation, meals, internal travel, and a reasonable buffer for emergencies. There's no fixed minimum specified.
  • Sponsorship letter. Required if someone else is covering your costs. The letter should state their willingness and ability to support you, backed by their own bank statements or income documents.
  • Income documents. Pay slips or an employment contract if you're employed. Business registration documents and recent tax returns if you work for yourself.
  • For minors or dependents traveling alone. Parents or guardians may need to demonstrate their own financial stability, along with a notarized letter confirming they'll support the applicant financially during the trip.
  • For students. Proof of enrollment, plus a financial responsibility statement from parents, usually alongside their bank statements.
  • For retirees. Pension statements or other documented proof of income and assets.

Portugal Schengen Visa for Thai Citizens

Thai citizens are not visa-exempt and need to apply for a short-stay Schengen visa using the standard document checklist above. Portugal keeps limited direct diplomatic representation across Southeast Asia, so a representing Schengen partner embassy often handles applications rather than a Portuguese mission.

As of September 2026, applications from Thailand are submitted via TLScontact in Bangkok.

  1. Visa application form, completed in full and signed.
  2. One recent photo (taken within the last 3 months), attached to the application.
  3. Passport valid for at least 3 months after your journey ends, with one copy, plus any previous passports.
  4. Identity Card, Work Permit, Residence Permit and one copy of each.
  5. An original letter of employment, or evidence of business ownership such as a Business Registration Certificate with a copy, and an Income Tax Payment Certificate or Receipt as a true copy.
  6. For minors (person under 18 travelling alone or with only one parent): birth certificate, proof of custody (e.g. marriage certificate, divorce certificate, registration of residence); an authorisation to travel (alone or with one parent) indicating the purpose of the trip and signed by both parents/legal guardians or from the parent/guardian who does not travel, with a copy of their passports or national identification cards. The signature(s) should be verified by a legal entity (e.g., municipal registration office or court).
  7. Six months of bank statements or bank account booklets, copied and certified by the bank, or an original bank document in English stating the exact balance. Other proof of sufficient means of subsistence for the entire journey and duration of stay also works.
  8. Round-trip flight booking (and a copy)
  9. Confirmed hotel reservation (and a copy)
  10. Travel insurance (plus one copy). The insurance must cover:

  • Any expenses that might arise from COVID-19 or repatriation for medical reasons.
  • Coverage must be at least €30,000 or its equivalent in local currency.
  • If the application is for a multiple-entry visa, the medical insurance must be valid for the first planned entry. LUMA Travel Insurance is highly recommended as it meets all these requirements.
  1. Tourist visa holders must be able to prove possession of the equivalent of 70 euros for each day of their stay within the Schengen area.
  2. For business meetings/partners and persons staying at the residence of Portuguese citizens: Invitation issued by the host (with verified signature) which should be sent to the Embassy by fax or e-mail before the day of application. The original may be sent by post.

Portugal Schengen Visa for Indonesia Citizens

Indonesian citizens are not visa-exempt and need to apply for a short-stay Schengen visa using the standard document checklist above. The same representation issue applies here. 3. Passport with at least 3 months of validity after the planned journey ends, plus one copy and any previous passports.

Portugal Schengen Visa for Singapore Citizens

Singapore citizens don't need a visa to enter Portugal for tourism or business if the stay doesn't exceed 90 days within a 6-month period. It's worth verifying current requirements with the official Portuguese Embassy in Singapore before you travel.

Visa-free entry still comes with conditions at the border. Officers can ask for a return ticket, accommodation details, and proof you can support yourself, and hospital treatment in Portugal costs the same whether or not the paperwork asks for insurance.

Portugal Schengen Visa for Malaysian Citizens

Malaysian citizens similarly don't need a visa for tourism or business stays up to 90 days within a 6-month period. Portugal doesn't maintain its own embassy in Malaysia, so it's worth verifying details with the Portuguese Embassy in Singapore before finalizing travel plans, since that's the office typically handling representation for Malaysia as well.

How much does the Portugal Schengen Visa cost

The cost of obtaining a Schengen Visa for Portugal can vary based on the applicant’s age, visa type, and nationality. As of the last update on 11 June 2024, the general visa fee structure for the Schengen visa is as follows:

  • Adults: €90
  • Children aged 6–12: €45
  • Children under 6: Free

However, there are exceptions and reductions:

  • Students: Reduced fees or waivers may apply for students or postgraduates and accompanying teachers on educational trips.
  • Researchers: Individuals travelling for scientific research may benefit from reduced fees.
  • Diplomatic passport holders: can obtain a visa for free.
  • Certain categories of applicants from countries with Visa Facilitation Agreements with the Schengen states may be subject to a reduced visa fee of EUR 35.
  • Long-term visas: National visas or Type D visas, intended for longer stays or any other Schengen country, might have a different fee structure.

Fees are non-refundable, even if your visa application is rejected. Additionally, visa processing agencies or centres might charge an additional service fee.

Travel Insurance Requirements for Portugal Schengen Visa

Travel Insurance for a Schengen Visa under the Portugal visa requirements must cover:

  • The cost of repatriation for medical reasons or death
  • Urgent healthcare and emergency hospital treatment for your entire stay, throughout the Schengen Area
  • A minimum coverage amount of €30,000, or the equivalent in your local currency
  • If your application is for a multiple-entry visa, your insurance needs to be valid for at least your first planned entry

Consulates check this closely. Policies get rejected for the wrong coverage limit, the wrong date range, or cover that stops at the Portuguese border instead of extending across the zone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Generally no, as long as you stay inside the international transit area and don't clear Portuguese immigration control on your way to another Schengen or non-Schengen destination.

Biometric data, including fingerprints and a photograph, may be required from Schengen visa applicants as part of the process, collected to enhance security and streamline border control within the Schengen Area.

Transit requirements can vary by airport, so it's worth checking the specific rules of the airport you'll be transiting through. Generally, staying within the international transit area without passing through immigration control shouldn't require a separate visa.

No. Biometric data collection is typically required for all Schengen visa applicants regardless of age, including both adults and children.

Switching from a short-stay Schengen visa to another status inside Portugal isn't normally possible. If you entered as a tourist and want to study, work, or stay long term, you generally leave the Schengen Area and apply for the visa or residence permit that matches your new purpose. Portugal's immigration authorities are the reliable source on what your specific case allows.

Extending a short-stay Schengen visa within Portugal is generally not possible. These visas are issued for a specific duration, and if you need more time, you'd typically need to leave the Schengen Area and reapply, or explore a long-term stay option like a residence permit if you meet the eligibility criteria. Checking directly with Portugal's immigration authorities is the most reliable way to confirm current options.
