It started as stomach pain, which is how almost every one of these stories starts, and why almost nobody acts on it quickly. Our member had just arrived in Brazil and put the discomfort down to the trip.
It did not settle. The pain spread into distension, then nausea and vomiting, then concentrated in the lower right of the abdomen, which is the point at which appendicitis stops being a guess. Scans at the emergency department showed bowel obstruction and appendicitis, and surgery went ahead the same day.
What the surgeons found was worse than the scans. The appendix had already perforated and gone necrotic, abscesses had formed in the pelvis, and the bowel had shut down. Possible sepsis was noted. This was no longer a routine appendectomy but major emergency abdominal surgery, followed by a hospital admission.
Roughly one day separated ordinary stomach pain from an operating table in a country he had just landed in. There was no call to LUMA before the surgery, and that is exactly as it should be. In a true emergency nobody expects you to find your policy documents or dial an assistance line from a gurney. Go to the emergency room, get treated, and deal with the paperwork once you are stable. Not calling first does not cost you your claim.
The bill came to BRL 94,810.90, around USD 18,271. He paid it at discharge, then sent us the documents and the story once he was well enough to put it together.
