Guide for Czech Republic Visa Requirements

March 12 2026| October 12 2026
Czech Republic visa

If a trip to the Czech Republic is on your calendar, chances are you'll need both a Schengen visa and travel insurance for the Czech Republic. The short-term visa opens the door to stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day window, and the travel insurance fulfils the travel requirements.

Exactly which documents you'll need depends on your nationality, and no matter how you enter, by land, sea, or air, you'll be asked to show certain paperwork to the border police. LUMA put this guide together to help you work through what's required for a Czech Schengen visa

Is the Czech Republic a Schengen area member?

Yes. It joined the EU in 2004 and the Schengen Area in 2007, which means a Czech visa opens up border-free travel across the whole zone.

What is the cost of a Schengen Visa for the Czech Republic?

As of the last update on 11 June 2024, the general visa fee structure for the Schengen visa is as follows:

  • Adult: €90
  • Child aged 12 to 18: €90 (charged the full adult fee)

External service providers working for Czech consular authorities add their own fees. None of it comes back if your application is refused.

Where should I apply for a Czech Visa?

Every applicant books their own appointment, so a family of four books four slots. You apply through the VFS Global office or the Czech consulate in your home country, and requirements vary by country.

It's worth booking well ahead. Embassies and VFS offices often take appointments only by email, so confirm what your local office expects before you head there.

How Long Does Czech Republic Visa Processing Take

According to Regulation (EU) 2019/1155 amending the Visa Code, Art. 23, A decision on a complete Schengen visa application is issued within 15 calendar days, extendable to a maximum of 45 calendar days if the consulate asks for more documents or wants an interview. Peak season adds further delay.

Applying at least a month in advance gives you enough buffer that a follow-up request won't put your trip at risk.

Can I utilize my Schengen Visa to enter other countries?

Yes. Under Schengen rules, a Schengen visa is generally valid for travel throughout the Schengen Area. One rule matters: you apply at the consulate of your primary destination. Spending eight nights in Austria and two in Prague means applying to Austria.

Is travel insurance required for a Czech Republic visa?

Yes. Your policy has to be valid for all 29 Schengen Area countries, including the ones you have no plans to visit, and cover accidents and illness to a minimum of €30,000.

Consulates check this closely. Applications get rejected over the wrong coverage limit, an incorrect date range, or coverage that stops at the Czech border instead of extending across the whole zone.

Can I switch my visa type or residence status while in the Czech Republic?

Changing the purpose of your stay to a long-term residence permit is possible, though it depends on how long you're staying and which Czech visa applies to your situation.

Can I extend my short-stay Schengen Visa in the Czech Republic?

Extensions aren't generally granted outside exceptional circumstances. To stay longer, the usual route is to leave the Schengen Area and apply for a new visa before returning. Since immigration requirements can change at short notice, it's worth checking with your travel agent or the Czech Embassy in your home country for the latest guidance before finalizing plans.
