Guide for Spain Visa Requirements
Most travelers heading to Spain need a Schengen visa, which allows a stay of up to 90 days in any 180 days, and travel insurance for Spain. What you have to submit depends on your passport. A Thai national and a Singaporean national planning the same two-week trip to Barcelona face completely different paperwork.
Before you book anything, check where your nationality sits. Countries listed in Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2018/1806 need a Schengen visa. The European Commission also publishes a short-stay calculator that shows how many days you have left in your 180-day window, which matters if you have already traveled in the Schengen Area this year.
How can I get a Schengen visa for Spain?
You apply through the Spanish consulate or embassy in your home country, or through the BLS Spain Visa Application Centre, depending on where you live.
Two rules trip people up. Every applicant books their own appointment, so a family of four books four slots. And applications go in person, not by post. If the applicant is under 18, both parents have to be there at submission.
Book early. Consulate calendars in Bangkok and Hanoi fill up during peak season, and a late appointment is the most common reason a trip gets pushed back.

Spain Visa Requirements for Singapore Citizens
Singaporean passport holders don't need a short-stay visa for visits to Spain under 90 days. According to the current guidance, it's recommended to periodically check directly with the Spanish Embassy for any changes.
Visa-free entry still comes with conditions at the border. Officers can ask for a return ticket, accommodation details, and proof that you can support yourself, and hospital treatment in Spain costs the same whether or not the paperwork asks for insurance.
Whatever your nationality, the embassy or consulate can request extra documents based on your visa type. For the full application procedure, the official website of the Spanish Embassy or Consulate in your country is the source.
What is the cost of a Schengen visa for Spain?
As of the last update on 11 June 2024, the visa fee is €90 for people aged over 12, and €45 for children aged 6 to 11. Children aged 5 and under are exempt from the fee. Application centres add their own service fee on top.
What are the financial support criteria for a Spain Schengen Visa application?
The European Commission states that a foreigner seeking to enter Spain needs to attest to owning at least €100 per day, with a minimum of €900 per person, regardless of intended stay duration. To provide evidence of financial means, you can submit:
- Bank statement. Showing sufficient funds for your trip duration. Should be no older than 3 months, with all pages included.
- Sponsorship letter. If someone else is supporting your trip, accompanied by the sponsor's bank statement, also no older than 3 months.
- A combination of a bank statement and a sponsorship letter, demonstrating both your own resources and support from another person.
- Affidavit of support. If you don't have a bank account or sufficient funds, you may need friends or relatives you're visiting in Spain to sign an official affidavit of support at the corresponding office in their place of residence. Carry the original document when applying.
Travel tip: Carry originals of all documents, plus a copy of each, when traveling to Spain.
How do I get a medical certificate for a visa to Spain?
A medical certificate confirms you are in good health, fit to travel, and do not need further vaccinations or procedures before departure.
Your doctor issues it. The certificate has to be printed on the medical centre's headed paper, then signed and stamped.
For the application, you submit a photocopy of the original along with a translation done by a sworn translator carrying Hague Apostille certification. A standard translation will not pass. Every country has its own Hague Apostille representatives, so find one before your appointment date rather than after.
How long does it take to process a visa for Spain?
The legal decision window is 15 calendar days from the day after you submit.
That stretches to 45 calendar days if the consulate calls you for an interview or asks for more documents. Apply at least a month ahead of travel.
Can I Switch My Visa Type or Extend My Stay in Spain
Switching visa type or residence status while in Spain can be done under certain conditions, though the process runs long and approval is never automatic. It has to comply with Spanish immigration law. Spanish immigration authorities are the only reliable source on what is currently possible.
Extending a short-stay Schengen visa from inside Spain is generally not possible. These visas are issued for a fixed period. If you need longer, you leave the Schengen Area and reapply, or look at a residence permit if you qualify.
What If My Spanish Visa Is Denied
Refusals always come in writing with the reason stated. You can appeal for reconsideration to the Consular Office that handled your case within one month of the day after you receive the refusal notice.
Read the stated reason carefully first, since many refusals come down to a fixable gap like insufficient funds or an insurance policy below the €30,000 threshold.
Can I Visit Other European Countries With My Visa
Yes. Under Schengen rules, a Schengen visa is generally valid for travel across the Schengen Area.
One rule matters here: you apply at the consulate of your main destination. If Spain is where you are spending most of your trip, apply to Spain. If you are spending eight nights in France and two in Madrid, apply to France.
Immigration requirements change at short notice, so confirm with your travel agent or the Embassy of Spain in your country before you finalize plans.
Is travel insurance mandatory for a Spain visa?
Yes, travel insurance is mandatory. Your policy has to be valid across all 29 Schengen Area countries, including the ones you have no plans to visit, and cover accidents and illness to a minimum of €30,000.
Consulates check this closely. Policies get rejected for the wrong coverage limit, the wrong date range, or coverage that stops at the Spanish border instead of extending across the zone.

It launched progressively from October 12, 2025, and has been fully operational at all external border crossing points since April 10, 2026. First-time travelers under the system provide a facial image and four fingerprints at the border. It doesn't change visa requirements.
